Taplejung lies in the eastern part of Nepal. Mt.Kanchenjungha (8,586m), the third highest peak in the world lies in Taplejung. It is also famous for the sacred Pathivara temple which is also considred as wish fulfilling Goddess. Taplejung is considered as one of the beautiful place in Nepal borders with India in the east and the Tibetan Autonomous Region of China in the North. This areas posses Alpine grasslands, rocky outcrops, dense temperate, sub-tropical forests and low river valleys.
Tinjure Milke Jaljale ridge forms the border between Taplejung, Tehrathum and Sankhuwasabha districts. The world largest natural Rhododendron forest with the highest number of rhododendron species in the world is found here and this area is rich in biodiversity.
Taplejung is rich in cultural heritage. For a instance Buddhist gompas (monasteries) callled Diki Chhyoling Gompa of Olangchungola is 400 years old. It has the statue of Avalokiteshwara. A butter lamp at the altar has been burning here uninterrupted since the construction of the gompa. The twelve prayers wheels with prayer ” Om mane Padme Hum” is inscribed on those wheels and it is continuously spin with the help of small steam outside the gompa.
The predominant people living in the kanchenjungha region are the Limbus, with the higher regions inhabited by the people of Tibeto-Mongoloid ancestry. The major caste living in this region are the Tibetans, Sherpas, Rais, Gurungs, Magars, Newars, sunuwars and Tamangs. Further, Chhetris and Brahmins also live in this region.
The main means of livelihood in this region are cardamom farming, agriculture, animal husbandry and tourism . The Sherpa people who came from Tibet more than four hundred years ago live in the higher altitudes. The Sherpa of this region varies in terms of culture and life style as compared to the Sherpa of the Solukhumbu.
The Mechi Highway connects Taplejung from Char Aali which is 227 km. There is also direct flight (charter) available from Kathmandu to Suketar. One can also take a bus from Dharan to Dhunkuta- Basantapur- Hile and trek from there. Bus service are also available from Birtamod Jhapa to Taplejung .
There are tourists facilities in Phungling bazaar and Suketar. Lodges and campsites are available en route to kanchenjungha and Pathivara.
